Student reading is a special kind of reading function that has always been important to students. All elementary school subjects such as math, science, social studies, and spelling are required for students to read. At the secondary and university levels, a learner's literacy becomes even more important. Adult students must read in order to understand a wide variety of topics. Student reading also requires the ability to read special types of material including illustrations, graphs, maps, and tables. Because people learn throughout their lives, these reading skills are still useful after a person has finished formal education.

Another type of functional reading is workplace reading. This reading is concerned with the ability to read the materials necessary to do a particular job. These materials include instructional books for operating computers, robots, and other technical machines. In addition, job promotion often entails enrollment in classes or training workshops that require specific reading skills. This is one of the aspects in which a person's ability to read directly affects his academic success.

In addition to the reading that people do in the classroom and at work, they read books, magazines, and other materials for personal information and recreation. Many read to gain knowledge of their personal interests, such as sports, science, current events, history, health, flowers, or art. Millions of people read novels, adventure stories, biographies and other books for entertainment. Recreational reading helps people understand others, takes them on a journey to unknown parts of the world, and enables them to share their experiences with people throughout history.
