Syria: Russian Storm is a real-time strategy with a high level of realism. There are no "health bars" for equipment in the game. Damage is calculated by module, taking into account the protection of each module and the strength of the damaging factor. The damage caused affects the functionality of each module.

The player has the ability to repair equipment in the field, but only the functionality of the modules, not the armor. The game uses a high-quality physics-based system for destroying buildings and other objects. This not only enhances the game's entertainment value, but also affects tactics during missions, especially in urban areas. Soldiers and equipment move from mission to mission, gaining experience in each one. As they gain experience, their effectiveness increases. The player can choose who and what equipment to send into battle before a mission and during a mission when calling for reinforcements. In the game, players can capture and use enemy vehicles. Various tactical options are available: setting up smoke screens, landing from helicopters, conducting airstrikes, storming buildings, using heat traps and active protection systems.
